    1. Startup and Technical
      1. BASF Load Shed System
      2. This project was different from our previous load shedding applications since we had a special PowerNet client developed that intelligently re-closed loads onto a generator. The purpose of the system was to prevent overloading the generator. The problem (and this will be common to most sites) was the generator didn't have sufficient capacity to power the entire complex when utility power was lost. As such, the program would check to see if closing the "next" load (from a user defined breaker list) would add too much load. So basically the system:

        1) Monitored loss of utility voltage

        2) Shed a certain number of breakers to insure that when the generators connected they would not be overloaded.

        3) Monitored the load on the generators and would close in additional loads as appropriate, always mindful not to overload the generator.

The app note at the URL below discusses this in more detail.

      3. MV90 Connectivity

We have a new connectivity solution that should be of great interest to the field - we can now connect PowerNet to Utility Translation Systems (UTS) MV-90 Meter Reading Software. MV-90 is the most popular remote meter reading software used by utilities. In the past, if we were asked if we were "MV-90" compliant, the answer was no. What we did for a recent project (Navistar) was contract to have a translation program written that converts our ENGLOG32.MDB database into the MV-90 HHF format. UTS customers have a program that loads onto our Ethernet Gateway or desktop PC that understands the MV-90 dial-in protocol. This program (RPC.EXE) answers the phone, authenticates the caller and then copies the HHF file to the remote MV-90 system.

    2. Product Tips
      a. Using MS Excel with PowerNet DDE Server

NetPower DDE Server is the server application that enables communication between PowerNet DeviceServer and any Windows-based application that uses DDE protocol. Using PowerNet DDE tags (see PowerNet Manual on NetPower DDE and the associated appendix Device Objects), MS Excel can communicate with a DeviceServer to access C-H device values (watts, current, etc.) and issue commands (trip, close, etc.) to C-H devices.

Using MS Excel’s DDE features, spreadsheet features, Visual Basic macro feature, it is possible to create simple graphic displays containing both static and dynamic portions, create control buttons to issues commands, and use the spreadsheet functions to manipulate device readings to produce totals, differences, percentages, etc..

This can be a valuable tool for trouble shooting graphic applications, demonstrating DDE applications, or providing a simple graphics solution.

The application note at the URL below provides an example of using MS Excel 97 features with PowerNet DDE to interact with an Addressable Relay II.

    3. Application Story
      a. Changing the Rules of Energy Cost Allocation

Energy consumption is a major operations cost for any building and a significant part of every tenant’s rent. Traditionally, energy costs have been treated as overhead and allocated to departments, production lines and tenants based upon unfair financial methods, such as square footage. But Iguatemi Mall has changed this paradigm with Cutler-Hammer Power Management Products.

    4. Product News
      a. New IQ Analyzer 6400 and 6600 Series

The current 6000 & 6200 series IQ Analyzers have been replaced by the 6400 & 6600 series. The new features of the 6400/6600 series make the world’s best permanently mounted Power Quality meter even better! In addition to the features that had already set the 6000 & 6200 series meters apart, such as waveform capture, harmonic analysis of voltage & current and on-board digital and analog I/O the new 6400/6600 series has these added features:

The new IQ Analyzer 6400 series replaces the previous 6000 series. The new 6600 series replaces the 6200 series and has all of the features of the 6400 series plus waveform display on the faceplate and high speed dv/dt trigger for transient event capture. The all new IQ Analyzer 6400/6600 will be available in May of 2000.

      b. New Power Modules for IQ Analyzer and IQ DP-4000

The upgraded IQ DP4000 and the new 6400/6600 series IQ Analyzers will now carry the CE mark and will use a new series of power modules. These new power modules offer the widest flexibility in the industry and have greater surge withstand capabilities and increased noise immunity. Three new power modules are available:

      c. New IQ 220 Display

Cutler-Hammer will soon start shipping the IQ 220 electronic meter with a new display module. This new module has the same four line by 20 character LDC display but in an improved housing made of a rugged polycarbonate material.. The new display module will fit into either the standard ¼ DIN square cutout or the standard ANSI 100mm round meter hole. This feature makes retrofitting your old analog meters even easier! The new display module will be available as part of the IQ 220 meter package or can be ordered separately. Available from the warehouse in mid May.

d. New DT3030 and DT3031 Overcurrent Relays

The new DT3030 overcurrent relay is designed for 24 or 48 Vdc control power applications and carries the CE mark. The DT3030 provides the same protection and metering features as the standard DT3000 relay. The low voltage option is also available in the Quick Release Drawout Case option when ordered as catalog # DT3031. In addition to meeting the CE requirements, the new DT3030 and standard DT3000 now meets the new ANSI C37.90.2 standard for Electromagnetic Interference, making it more secure in harsh electrical environments.
