a. Peak Shaving System at the University of Notre Dame
With demand charges exceeding 50% of the total cost of an energy bill, installing a system to reduce peak demand charges offers a significant payback. The University of Notre Dame discovered that by installing a Cutler-Hammer Peak Shaving system with PowerNet software, they were able to reduce their energy costs so substantially, the system returned its entire cost in less than 1.6 years. Plans to add additional generation (500 kVA) mathematically project to return the cost of investment in under 7 months.

Up until this latest release of PowerNet, 1.11, to run device server the NT user that is logged on needs to be the administrator for that PC. This was a problem for some customers. The Services option enables the Device Server to be executed on startup of NT without requiring the user to log on at all. Any other normal client software packages can be included in the startup batch file and will respond very well no matter what user logs on to the NT machine. This gives you the flexibility of creating other users with less capabilities as NT was designed to provide.

a. PowerNet Startup
PowerNet software suite includes multiple client and server programs. To help manage energy costs, troubleshoot power quality problems, and ensure the reliability and integrity of the electrical distribution system, certain PowerNet client and server programs must be running. Read about it at:

a. Using Fixed Gear Mounted Power Quality Monitors to Perform a Power Factor and Harmonic Study
In an effort to attain an acceptable level of integrity in the power distribution system, and to attempt to prevent the line harmonics from unknowingly becoming a serious problem, a tire company’s engineers expanded a proposed energy monitoring system to include monitoring the quantity and quality of the power. After reviewing many of the power monitoring devices currently on the market, the Cutler-Hammer IQ Analyzer was chosen for several reasons: the large amount of power quality data available from the meter; the accuracy of the measurements; the ability to network into a central SCADA node, and the ability to monitor so many parameters based on operator determined threshold levels.

Energy Manager On-Line
documents the Oakville Ford Plant’s quest for better monitoring and management of their energy consumption through better identification and greater visibility of its usage at the most fundamental level. Ford chose Cutler-Hammer’s integrated monitoring protection and control communication (IMPACC) system, including both hardware and software components, for monitoring the electrical distribution network. Its successful implementation has enabled Ford to reduce energy consumption and lower their overall costs by over 14 percent!Internet: http://www.energymag.com/curr/article1.phtml?id=87

a. Now Available: Ethernet PONI
The EPONI enables Ethernet communications for a single PowerNet device through a PONI interface. It is designed for applications where a corporate or campus Ethernet backbone is available in close proximity to the metered point and the highest communications speed to a meter is desired.

a. Power Management Users Group Meeting
The first annual Power Management Users (PMUG) Meeting is now a part of Cutler-Hammer history. Held at the Sheraton Station Square in Pittsburgh November 3-5, 1999, the event garnered positive reviews from those in attendance. Sixty-five power management customers used the forum to network and share best power management practices with other users.
The program included presentations by Ford, Bayer, PPG, Alabama Power, Bayer and the University of Notre Dame engineers. They explained to the audience how they leveraged their Cutler-Hammer Power Management Systems to help them meet objectives. Cutler-Hammer marketing and engineering leaders presented key issues affecting customers’ power systems.
Users visited the Power Monitoring Room, the Energy Management Room and the Technology and Products Room for a hands-on, up-close look at Cutler-Hammer products and services. Tours of the Cutler-Hammer Technical Center and Power Management Products Center, and of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) were also on the schedule of events.
We’re setting our sights for an even bigger and better PMUG in 2000. Stay tuned to PowerNews! and we’ll keep you posted!
