1. Startup and Technical

a. IQ DP-4000 Configuration Software Application Note
There are two ways to change IQ DP-4000 settings: (1) Manually or (2) Via PowerNet. Although the IQ DP-4000 Configuration Disk contains a tool to determine the proper IQ DP-4000 settings, these settings cannot be automatically downloaded to the meter. For a discussion of the configuration process, see the application note at:

b. INCOM Wiring vs. Radio Modems
Trying to install INCOM wiring is difficult in situations such as:

Radio modem links may be the solution. PMP has tested and approved the MDS9810 radio modem that connects between PowerNet and MINTs and extends the distance between them to several miles (open line of sight required). The units operate on the license free 900 MHz band and use spread spectrum technology to minimize interference with existing users of those channels. PowerNet and MINTs with 4/99 or later firmware are required. Series III cannot be used. Refer to pages 1-3, 2-12 and 3-14 in the Connectivity Guide for more information.

c. Key Advantage of INCOM over Modbus RS-485
During a recent Series III/Wonderware start-up at a Houston-area chemical plant, a previously working RS-485 Modbus network connecting 6 or so Multilin MTM+ meters ceased to function. Analysis with an oscilloscope showed very low signal levels being transmitted from the master (Wonderware). Suspecting a shorted network cable or shorted transmitter in a Multilin meter we disconnected, one-by-one, the Multilin meters.

We found a meter whose transmitter was shorted, thus effectively bringing down the entire network.

Note that the INCOM system uses an isolation transformer between the network and the circuitry on the PONI. Other than an insulation failure in the windings of this transformer, it is physically impossible to have the same problem with INCOM. This problem occurs with RS-485 devices since they must be DC coupled to the network in order to maintain the necessary square wave-shape to and from the network. A very large capacitor can be used to provide some isolation, but these are typically electrolytic capacitors with a limited life and low voltage ratings.

Bottom Line: INCOM provides 1500 V of network isolation. RS-485 provides little or none.

2. Product Tips

a. PowerNet File Backups
Many new files are added to your hard disk upon installation of PowerNet. When you create a custom configuration, some of the files loaded from the CD-ROM are modified. A modified file cannot be restored by reinstalling the PowerNet CD-ROM since these files have been changed and represent custom configuration. If you experienced a hard drive failure, you want a method to restore the system to your custom configuration, not an out-of-the-box "unconfigured" mode. So which files should be backed up?

3. Application Story

a. Power System Disturbances at a Large Industrial Facility using the IQ Analyzer
This case outlines uses of the Cutler-Hammer IQ Analyzer by a large chemical plant in the Southeastern United States. The site was able to immediately determine the cause of its interruption, focusing resources on correcting the problem immediately, minimizing lost production and associated profit. The heart of the system is the IQ Analyzer, a fixed mounted power quality meter that offers fully functional metering, ANSI C12 revenue accuracy, harmonic parameters to the 50th harmonic including harmonic voltage and current magnitudes and phase angles, and system disturbance capabilities including the ability to capture waveforms. All waveforms shown are actual waveforms captured by the IQ Analyzer at the aforesaid facility.

a. MP-3000 Motor Protection Relay
Introducing the new MP-3000 Motor Protection Relay, designed for maximum motor service and safety. This new relay provides the industry's best motor protection through Intel-I-TripTM overload protection, a field-proven algorithm that develops custom trip curves from motor nameplate data. The MP-3000 has the distinction of being the only microprocessor-based protective relay on the market today certified to UL 1053, the standard for ground fault sensing and relaying equipment.

Other noteworthy features of our new relay: Date and time stamped event log, trip details and alarm and start details; automatic plotting of motor starting current versus time; industry's longest voltage ride-through at 30 cycles; quick release drawout case; armed/disarmed modes; PowerNet communications.

To learn more about the extensive feature set of the MP-3000 Motor Protection Relay, contact the Fulfillment Center (cutler@ipcjci.com or 1-800-957-7050) to order the MP-3000 brochure (B.17D.01.S.E) and visit the MP-3000 web page:

b. NetPower Pager
Break the chains tying maintenance and engineering personnel to PCs, with NetPower Pager! This new PowerNet application sends an alpha or numeric pager message to essential personnel when a parameter monitored via PowerNet registers outside the predefined limits. And since the alarms are picked up through a DDE server, Series III and multiple vendors' equipment can be integrated.

c. Ethernet NetLink
Ethernet NetLink is a new product designed to connect as many as 200 PowerNetTM devices to an existing Ethernet network. Netlink's 10 Megabaud communications link supports push technology favored by Information Technology departments because of its minimal impact on an existing network's bandwidth. The NetLink's on-board logging and event storage capability far exceeds the built-in logging capability of more traditional device-based logging.

The NetLink comes standard with all configuration software included in NetPower Core allowing you to:

  1. establish communications to its 200 devices
  2. set up trending
  3. capture events
  4. set analog alarms.
Front-end software from the PowerNet suite (sold separately) completes the package. Choose NetPower Monitor for a user interface or NetPower Graphics for a fully-customizable graphical development environment.

d. Ethernet PONI (EPONI)
Do you have the need to monitor energy consumption on remote meters but are unable to justify the cost of running twisted-pair for only one meter? The Ethernet PONI (EPONI) may be the solution to your problem. The Ethernet PONI attaches to the back of IQ Analyzers, IQ DP 4000s, and IQ Data Plus IIs, allowing direct connection to your existing or dedicated Ethernet Network. You can choose the correct EPONI for your media type: twisted-pair, 10Base-T or Fiber, 10Base-FL.
